FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The event on Tuesday, June 17, will help finalize design options for a roundabout in
Southwest DeKalb County
ATLANTA – June 10, 2025 –Metro South Community Improvement District (MSCID) will hold a truck rodeo event in collaboration with the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) to finalize design options for the planned roundabout at the Thurman/Cedar Grove/Old McDonough intersection. The truck rodeo will allow operators of various classifications of semi-trucks and trailers to test a full-scale roundabout design with the intent of determining if design modifications are needed with the concept proposed for this intersection.
The project team will create a full-scale layout of the current preferred roundabout design using paint, traffic cones and other temporary materials to allow various-sized tractor-trailers, fire trucks and other large commercial vehicles to test the layout during the rodeo.
In addition to featuring trucks of various sizes, the event will include drivers with a range of commercial driving experience to provide the CID’s design firm, Kimley-Horn, with field data to assist in finalizing the project design. This event will serve as a tactical urbanism demonstration, bringing technical models to life in a practical setting. The rodeo event will allow the design team to test various concepts in real space, using the actual freight vehicles that will need to traverse the future roundabout.
“The rodeo will be key to finalizing the best design for this critical infrastructure improvement in our CID, which is focused on logistics, distribution and, of course, has a predominance of trucks flowing in and out of the district,” said Larry Kaiser, P.E. – executive director, Metro South CID.
The ARC received Federal Highway Administration funding from the Surface Transportation Block Grant Program, which MSCID applied for in 2023 and was awarded a transportation planning grant to develop a concept based on the feasibility and operations of various roundabout design alternatives at the existing 5-legged signalized intersection. The ultimate goal is to correct the operational deficiencies at this highly traveled freight intersection with a future infrastructure project.
The truck rodeo will be held on Tuesday, June 17, with lunch at 12 p.m., followed by the demonstration from 1 to 3 p.m., at 3501 Moreland Ave, Conley, Georgia, 30288. Parking available on site.
About Metro South CID
The Metro South Community Improvement District was organized for the purpose of assisting commercial, industrial and manufacturing business owners to promote common interests in enhancing the safety and general appearance, as well as developing partnerships with local, state and federal governments to leverage resources for improvements to roadway infrastructure in Conley, Georgia. Metro South CID, formerly the Greater Conley CID and formed by the Conley Area Business Association (CABA) in 2016, is known as Truckers Alley and is home to some of the largest logistics and transportation companies in Georgia. In addition, the opportunities for the growth of logistics-related companies attracted Shadowbox Studios (formerly Blackhall Studios), one of the larger film and entertainment studios in metro Atlanta, to the CID.
