Restoring History: Thomasville Cemetery Cleanup by Metro South CID – Preserving 150 Years of Legacy

March 12 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The Metro South CID invites you to attend the kickoff cleanup event for Thomasville Cemetery on Wednesday, March 12, at 1 p.m. This neighborhood cemetery on Fleetwood Drive has been abandoned and neglected for many years now and the CID hopes to restore it with the assistance of Yellowstone Landscaping, LLC.

The cemetery’s history dates back to the 1870s, with the first burial occurring in 1878. The last burial took place in 1952 and there are roughly 427 graves. Many headstones have been stolen or are missing, and some graves are marked only with yucca plants. Enslaved elders historically used yucca plants to mark the graves of their loved ones.

We will hear from Larry Kaiser, Metro South CID’s Executive Director, Super District 6 Commissioner Ted Terry and Joel Slaton, a neighbor who has been attempting to upkeep the property with the community’s help.

Please RSVP to Emma Smith at esmith@c21pr.com by March 10. This event will be happening rain or shine. There will also be opportunities for interviews with our speakers. We look forward to seeing you!
